Where does the name "Painted Lady" come from?

You know those beautifully detailed, victorian houses that are painted in bright colors? Those are painted ladies.

The colorful butterflies that migrate around the world are also painted ladies.

Tattooed women of the turn of the century who transgressed gender norms and were wildly successful circus sideshow acts were known as painted ladies.

But none of these are the inspiration behind Painted Lady Pottery. About 10 years ago, a local antique shop called Painted Lady Vintage was going out of business and let me buy their huge wooden sign for $100. I've always wanted to have my own shop so the big wooden sign, even though it is dusty in storage at the moment, symbolizes what COULD BE for me, and for everyone.

Why is handmade better?

You probably already know this, but buying from a handmade maker is a billion times better. Not only are you supporting a small business, you are helping an artist keep creating. Painted Lady Pottery is also committed to repurposing and reusing materials whenever I can, from shipping boxes to jewelry parts, even CLAY! So together we are reducing waste as well. Thank you.

 A word on shipping:

My goal of course, is for you to receive your beautiful pottery item FULLY INTACT. That being said, shipping can be problematic and with pottery it is an added challenge. (Did you know UPS's stated policy is to package boxes to survive a 5 foot drop or something like that?!?!)

Rest assured, if your piece is damaged in shipping, I will issue a full refund while we come up with a replacement.

I also painstakingly package every item to ensure as safe of a trip as possible. Also understand that prices will reflect that added handling, time and materials.

I will belly-ache over your items until each of them reach you, so let me know they arrived safely!
